Questions Donors Ask

Is my donation tax deductible?

The Hope Grows at Home Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so gifts are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. PayPal emails a receipt at the time of your gift.

Where does my money actually go?

Into houses, with a small share for the administration that keeps a nonprofit compliant. We buy vacant and distressed properties, our own crew renovates them to a healthy, move-in-ready standard, and we sell them at or near what it cost us to buy and rebuild them. We do not take a margin on the sale, which is exactly why the work needs funding.

Why does a break-even sale need donations?

Because break-even is the price, not the profit. Acquisition, materials, labour, and carrying costs all have to be paid before a family closes, and selling at cost means nothing is left over to fund the next house. Donations are what start the next one.

Can I see program documentation before I give?

Yes. We are glad to share program documentation, budgets, and references with funders and partners. Ask us and we will send them.

Can I donate a house I own?

Yes, and we would like to talk. What we can do depends on the property: its condition, the title, and anything owed on it. That is a conversation, not a web form, so call us and we will walk through it with you. A gift of real estate is treated differently from a cash gift at tax time, and the IRS asks the donor to have the property appraised, so bring your own tax advisor into it early.

I do not own it, but I know a house that deserves better.

Tell us where it is. Identifying the right houses is how every project starts, and a neighbour who notices an empty house is often the first person to know.
